SG in Ecuador, marks sixth anniversary of Hariri assassination, and more from UN Direct

SG: today the SG met with President Rafael Correa of Ecuador, after which he addressed the press, touching on Ecuador’s progress on human rights and climate initiatives, and urging Ecuador to do more to empower women. The SG will travel to Peru to meet with the country’s president tomorrow.

Security Council: today the Council held a closed meeting on the situation in Cambodia/Thailand, pursuant to a letter from the Cambodian Perm Rep to the Security Council President requesting the meeting.  The Foreign Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand were both at the UN for the meeting.

Lebanon: on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others, the SG issued a statement renewing his condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirming his support for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to bring the perpetrators to justice and “uncover the truth”.
