Earlier today, our friends at the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves hosted a press telebriefing. The group discussed how traditional cooking methods in much of the developing world causes severe hardships, including respiratory illness. Some 1.9 million people a year die from breathing toxic cookstove smoke.
If you are new to this issue, the MP3 below offers a good explanation of the problem of indoor household emissions and how clean cookstoves can help.
Panelists included: Leslie Cordes, Interim Executive Director, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves; Richard Grinnell, Executive Vice-President & COO, HELPS International Incorporated; Jacob Moss, Director, U.S. Cookstoves Initiatives, Office of the Secretary of State, Global Partnerships Initiative; and Kirk Smith, Professor of Global Environmental Health, University of California.
