Arguably one of the most violent places on earth over the past week was the Blue Nile region along the border between Sudan and the new Republic of South Sudan. The Sudanese Armed Forces bombarded towns and encampments suspected of supporting the Southern People’s Liberation Movement. This is the latest front in the Sudanese government’s efforts to purge the SPLM and their civilian supporters from the border regions between Sudan and south Sudan.
They were apparently successful. In less than a week, 20,000 people were flowing into refugee camps over the border in Ethiopia. This map, from the UN Refugee Agency, shows new refugee encampments that have sprouted up as a result of the conflict.
