Syria Talks Kick off in Vienna

For the first time the USA, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and other major players will sit down in the same room to discuss the possibility of an internationally negotiated end of the conflict. The hopes for real progress of this meeting are not sky-high, but the fact that a dialogue has been opened can be considered a step forward after years of international paralysis. Reuters offers the topline description of this meeting: “Washington stuck to its demand on Thursday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad leave power, ahead of peace talks which will include Assad’s main ally Iran for the first time, reflecting his stronger position since Russia joined the war on his side.”
