SRSG Haile Menkerios said UNMIS has been making adjustments to the deployment of existing troops throughout the cease-fire zones, consistent with its mandate and with full knowledge of both parties.
The Council extended the mandate (14-0-1) of the Sudan Panel of Experts that monitors the targeted arms embargo and sanctions. China abstained from the vote, as it doubted the objectivity of the report of the Panel.
Fistula in the Third Committee: earlier this week in the GA’s Third Committee (tasked with social, humanitarian and cultural issues), a Report of the SG on “Supporting efforts to end obstetric fistula” was introduced.
SC in Sudan: the SC delegation to Uganda and Sudan is currently in El Fasher, Darfur. Thus far, the delegation has been briefed by UNAMID and also visited a police training mission, where demonstrations were shown. Tomorrow, they plan to meet with government officials, community leaders, and internally displaced persons.
SC Mission: today the SC delegation visited the UN’s logistics base in Entebee, Uganda (where the UN houses much of its supplies for regional peacekeeping missions).
Global Fund Replenishment: The SG chaired the 3rd Global Fund Replenishment talks today, stating that the Global Fundhas been one of the major success stories of the 21st century and calling on the international community to defeat AIDS, TB and Malaria completely.
General Assembly: today the GA committees began their programs of work for the main part of the 65th session. The Fifth Committee will cover procurement reform, OIOS, human resources management, the administration of justice and the UN’s new Enterprise Resource Planning system called Umoja.
