This morning the US Agency for International Development launched “Every Child Deserves a 5th Birthday,” a new USA-led global push to eliminate unnecessary child deaths around the world. This is a big deal. If it is successful, this program could prevent the deaths of 7 million children under the age of 5.
I spoke with USAID Administrator Dr. Raj Shah about this new project for a UN Dispatch podcast. Dr Shah discusses why USAID is taking on this cause, and explains how new technological innovations can be harnessed to help more children reach their 5th birthday. We also discussed USAID’s response to the food crisis in the Sahel, which is posing a direct threat to child survival in several countries.
