Fifteen new members of the UN Human Rights Council were elected by the General Assembly today. Here is the vote count, from Global Memo:
No real surprises here. The Syria drama ended two weeks ago when Damascus dropped out of the race following Kuwait’s announcement that it was running for one of the four Asia seats. Voting is conducted by secret ballot, so we will probably never know what 5 countries voted for Syria as a write in candidate, but I am genuinely surprised that they received that minuscule support. Feel free to speculate in the comments about which countries you think voted for Syria.
