We continue our awful series on UN Dispatch with the latest humanitarian updates from the Horn of Africa.
Number of people affected:
12,391,394 people are in need in the Horn of Africa, up from 11.6 million on 26 July. An additional 800,000 people in Kenya are in need of food aid from August, and the numbers of Somali refugees continue to rise.
Children bearing the brunt of the crisis:
Across the affected countries, more than 2.34 million children are suffering from malnutrition of which more than 566,000 are severely malnourished and at risk of death.
1,300 new refugees arrive daily to Kenya, but some 300 a day to Ethiopia, down from a peak of 2,000
Out of an estimated US$2.5 billion in humanitarian requirements for Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, $1.2 billion has been committed
