Yet Another Attack on Polio Workers in Pakistan

Gunmen attacked a pair of polio vaccine workers in northwest Pakistan, killing one and wounding the other. “Officials say the women came under attack Tuesday in a village near the northwestern city of Peshawar.  The World Health Organization condemned the attack and said it would consult with local authorities on whether to continue the anti-polio campaign.  No group has claimed responsibility for the killing. The Taliban previously has condemned polio campaigns as a cover for spying.”  (Voice of America http://bit.ly/12fRLEv)

Myanmar Once Again Hit By Ethnic Violence After Women “Torched”

An ethnic Shan-Muslim man was arrested after he “torched” a woman selling gasoline. “A town official confirmed the arrest of the Muslim man who he said had ‘torched a woman with petrol’. A curfew was imposed late Tuesday to disperse angry mobs of local people — including Buddhist monks — who had ‘destroyed some houses and mosques’, the official added, also declining to be named. …Residents in Lashio, around 200 kilometres (120 miles) northeast of Mandalay, said Muslim shops and even a school had been set alight as furious mobs demanded the police hand the suspect over to them.” (AFP http://bit.ly/19ke6Rx)
