The United Nations commemorates August 19 as World Humanitarian Day. This was the date in 2003 in which the UN headquarters in Baghdad was targeted in truck bomb, killing 22 people including the top UN official in Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello.
The day was first designated in 2008 to draw attention to the perils and risks that aid workers face while delivering humanitarian relief to vulnerable populations. This year, the United Nations is using the day to shine a spotlight directly to the vulnerable populations themselves and remind belligerents that civilians are #NotATarget.
