Gerard Araud is the former French Ambassador to the United States and the United Nations. I reached out to him for an interview about the US election because I wanted to learn how a veteran senior diplomat from Europe is interpreting the US election results – and what suggestions he might have for how a Joe Biden administration may improve Trans-Atlantic relations.
We recorded this conversation on the Friday following the Tuesday of election day, when the result was all but certain. Ambassador Araud begins the conversation by placing the last four years of US foreign policy into a rather deep historic context of US foreign policy since George Washington. We then discuss how Trump’s foreign policy and general behavior impacted America’s reputation in Europe and how a new Biden administration might repair some of the damage done.
We cover a great deal of ground in this conversation, including the Iran Nuclear Deal, the Paris Climate Accords, digital cooperation on 5g and much, much more.
