This teenage boy was an Afghan refugee in Iran. The chances of being accepted into Iran, being permitted to work and gain an education were extremely dim. “Even if we stay 100 more years, we would have no prospects or future.” So, this boy, with the blessing of his parents, embarked on the perilous journey to Europe.
After Syrians, Afghans are the second largest nationality of refugees to Europe in this current wave. About 18 percent of the 375,000 refugees who have crossed via the Mediterranean are Afghans.
